David Rancourt
From Rouyn-Noranda, David Rancourt is a dance artist who has been based in Montreal since 1999. After training at the Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal (now EDCM), his versatility and love of multiple dance forms have enabled him to champion a wide range of choreographic proposals. Over the past twenty years, he has appeared in some fifty productions.
Early in his career, he met Paula de Vasconcelos, who, over the course of a 7-year collaboration, taught him a great deal about craft and creation. He discovered the power of dialogue, the richness of human relations in creation, and the close relationship between organization, craftsmanship and creativity.
Allowing dance or creative gesture to originate within oneself and then be shared is a quest of one's artistic practice.
This is one of the reasons why he decided to follow Marie-Claude Rodrigue's teachings through the practice of Qi Gong. This age-old practice has carved out a precious place for itself in the artist's journey, as a place to evolve humanly, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
« As a designer, I believe that the artist's sensitive gesture is political. I try to embody the change I'd like to see in this world. »
Concerned and aware of community issues such as the recognition of the status of the artist (in particular that of the dancer) and the need to enable our creations to meet their public and be deployed in different territories. On the other hand, it recognizes that our practices can no longer avoid even more important social issues, such as the distribution of power and wealth, living together and environmental protection.
Alternating between the roles of choreographer, performer, teacher and director, David has honed his sense of teamwork and coordination of the human, artistic and technical elements involved in developing a creative project. Keen to ensure that PPS Danse continues to be a crossroads for encounters between artists, disciplines and audiences, he makes every effort to be a unifying director, capable of openness, listening, risk-taking and freedom.
